Srey Hang: Sometimes, people hate me. However, people like my parents, relatives and friends motivate, encourage, care about and love me. Importantly, they encourage me to study hard. I know I was born in a different condition to others, as I have no legs and hands but, even so, I think I need to try my best to do anything that other people can do.

Mother: Sometimes Srey thinks about committing suicide. I advise her not to do this and accept what she has.

Srey Hang: I feel happy as my family always motivate me to study hard. Don’t discriminate against people with disabilities. My parents never treated me differently and they raise and love me like other children. There are 20-30 students in my class and I’ve achieved grade 3-5.

Mother: I feel very sorry for her and especially worry about her future when she doesn’t have me to take care of her. Who can she rely on when she faces an issue or challenge? Every day, we take her to and from school. Srey has an elder sister, but that’s not the same as a mother.

Srey Hang: I sometimes think that if my parents weren’t around, I wouldn’t know who to rely on. I also think that I have no choice and have to study hard so that I can have a job to rely on.

Mother: I want Srey to study as I see she is a smart student. I don’t want her drop out of school. When she finishes grade 12 I hope some organisation can provide financial support so that she can continue her studies. At home she studies until 10 or 11 o’clock before going to bed. I feel hopeful about her studies and I always encourage her to study hard so that she can get a job in the future.

Srey Hang: I don’t know why I born like this. I just accept what I have now.

Mother: I just don’t know how she will feel when she grows up, when other people have legs and hands. I’m very worried and wonder how she will manage in the future….. even though she can eat meals by herself and we just help her to shower and put clothes on.

Srey Hang: My teachers encourage me to study. I wish people would do not discourage or discriminate against people with disabilities. Don’t do anything that makes us feel disappointed or discouraged.
